Birkhall Primary School

Welcome to the Birkhall Primary School (Singapore) Alumnus!

It's high time we preserve some of the valuable landmarks in our memory before they are lost through senility and other pursuits.

History
We were told that our school was named after a British official but no one could authenciate that. According to Wikipedia, Birkhall was a 53,000 acre estate in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

School Song
Does anyone still remember the school song?
With the passage of time, I could only remember a few lines of the last verse :

United we stand, divided we fall,
Birkhall school will answer the call ...
Give off our best.

Nurturing
From our network of peers, seniors and juniors, we can count many medical doctors, PhDs, engineers, accountants, teachers, politicians, skilled and talented people who studied in this small and humble neighbourbood school.

Our Class
Most memorable was the our close-knitted class 6B. In the old days when there "streaming" was unheard of, the class stayed intact for six years (save for a handful of additions and departures). We literally grew up together.

This one of the few professionally taken photographs ... in black and white. Can you remember the names of everyone in the picture? The well groomed lady teacher was the late Miss Amy Tan (later Mrs Sun).

Hi I was from the class '67. Graduated in 1972.
I have absolutely fond memories of the school and the teachers there.... The late Mrs Sun, Mr Tang, Mr Cheah She Teck, Mr Cheong, my band teacher, Ms Teo Choo Beng ,my inspiration and reason why I am a teacher today to name a few and our wonderful Principal, Mrs Lucky Low.
Here's the school song I remember so well...

Steady in work and strong in games
Merits and credits wetry to claim
Success shall come to one and all
With confidence and courage we stand tall

United we stand, divided we fall
Birkhall students will answer the call
Our motto is, Give off your best
We demand hard work, expect no less.

I couldn't find the school badge, so I posted the school song on my facebook profile instead.

I am proud to be a graduand of Birkhall Primary School.

Cheers

Hi,

Birkhall was known as Birkhall Road School - not Birkhall Primary School. Still has my report card with me even though I am now many miles away from the beloved Margaret Drive b4 govt turns the whole area into a ghost town.

Hi,

It is unbelievable I find this site. Just feel like putting Birkhall School in the search and lo and behold... here I am.

I was Primary 1 in 1973. I remember my P1 form teacher Mrs Boon. She wrote in my report book "a very naughty boy." All my cousin laughed when they saw my report book that year. I was too blur to understand what was going on. It didn't bother me. It still doesn't bother me. In today understanding, I would say I was playful, not naughty.

I remember the tune of our school song, but forget much of the words, except "United we stand, divided we fall, Birkhall students will answer the call. Our motto is, give off your best." Always wonder what the next line is. Now I found it "We demand hard work and settle no less."

I still remember the principal, Mrs Low, during my lower primary days. She was such a loving woman. That's my impression of her. Then we had a new principal, Mr. Huang, when I was P4. Obviously he was a Chinese teacher to spoke to us in Mandarin. The awkward situation was the school students did not know how to greet him in Chinese. In the end, he just greeted the school in English. I wondered why no Chinese teacher bother to teach us to greet him in Chinese even until today, almost 40 years ago.

I have a lot of fond memories of my days in Birkhall School.

I don't remember there is a "Primary" in school name. My red report book just show Birkhall School.

Great to find this site.

Writing
O yes, Bitkhall I was in pri 1 in 1959. I remember there was a small zoo where we had animals like the monkeys, mouse deer, rabbits, birds. We had fun watching them and teasing them during recess. Then one day it was not fun anymore because a teacher put me in a cage with the monkeys staring at me. I left the school in year 1963 but this incident stayed in my memory. I had no resentment against the teacher because I got to shake hands with one of the monkeys and then I became so popular that even students from the other classes wanted to befriend me.

Wong, which year were you in Birkhall?
I tried to join the school band when I was P3 (1975). It was unsucessful for me. I have no talent in musical instrument. We were asked to drum. My friend broke the old drum and we ran away. Never return to the band.
